- BOYS BASKETBALL: Gators Use Stall Tactic To Cool Rockets
By Jeff Motz
Lincoln North Star hit big shots in the second half and went into a stall with five minutes remaining to eventually beat Lincoln Northeast 46-36 Friday night at Northeast's Ed Johnson Gym.
The Gators (6-4) led 27-25 after three quarters and began an 11-2 run with a Nate Tederman three-pointer with 7:05 left in the game. After a blocked shot and a missed three-pointer, senior guard Connor Musiel hit a tray from the top of the key to give North Star a 33-27 advantage.
That's when the Gators went into a stall offense for more than two minutes. During that span, Brook Bolles scored a layup to extend the North Star lead to 35-27.
After Northeast narrowed the gap on a pair of free-throws from Payton Helmstadter, North Star got a free throw from Tederman and Bolles added a baseline jump shot to extend the Gator lead to 38-29 with 2:32 left.
The Rockets tried to rally with Helmstadter hitting a three to narrow the deficit to 38-32.
Bolles and Logan Broeker each hit a pair of free throws with less than a minute to play and Musiel scored on a layup and drew a foul with 00.5 seconds remaining, only to miss the free throw.
Northeast took charge in the second quarter when junior forward Jai Cadwell scored seven of the Rockets' nine points for a 17-16 halftime lead.
Helmstadter led all scorers with 14 points for Northeast, while North Star got double-figures from Musiel with 13 points and Bolles with 11 points.
