WAVERLY--It may be cliche, but free throws count late in the game.

The Class B seventh-ranked Waverly girls basketball team hit 10 free throws down the stretch, enough to upend previously unbeaten Platteview 50-47 Friday night at the Waverly gym.

The Vikings (5-3) got an 11-2 spark early in the second half when senior guard Nicki Larsen hit a three pointer and scored three more points during the run, while Sam Hart hit a three-pointer to give Waverly a 28-23 lead.

A 9-0 run from Platteview put them ahead at 32-28 with three minutes left in the period before the Vikings turned the tables and went on a 10-0 run that carried into the fourth quarter when Ashley Cook hit two free throws for a 38-32 lead.

Waverly led Platteview get as close as two points the rest of the game.  Viking sophomore forward Brianna Boender hit a pair of free throws with 46 seconds remaining.  Her older sister, senior center Olivia Boender, hit a pair of free throws to seal the win with 15 seconds to play.  Olivia Boender finished with 11 points to lead Waverly in the victory, while Larsen and Hart each added 10 points.

Platteview went on an 8-0 run in the first quarter behind a pair of baskets from Kenzie Kulm and a layup from Mackenzie Zach.  Kulm had a game-high 14 points for the Trojans and teammate Sydney Feller finished with 10.  But Waverly finished the first quarter on a 6-0 run behind a pair of threes from Hart and Amanda Cook, trailing 10-8.

McKenna Hoy opened up the second quarter with a layup to tie the game, but Platteview sprinted to a 7-0 run and a 17-10 lead before leading 21-17 at the half.
