- BOYS BASKETBALL: Southeast Breezes Past Fremont To Win HAC Title
By Jeff Motz
Lincoln Southeast's defense may have had it's best performance of the season yet on Tuesday afternoon.
The Knights started out man-to-man and switched to a zone and shut down Fremont's 6-7 senior forward Mitch Hahn to earn a 76-53 victory and capture the Heartland Athletic Conference boys basketball championship at Lincoln Northeast's Ed Johnson Gym.
It wasn't just the defense.
Southeast (8-1) offensively raced out to an 8-0 lead sparked by a Trey Beamon three-pointer, a three-point play from BJ Day and a basket from Clayton Peterson.
Fremont's first basket came with 4:15 remaining in the first quarter from 6-6 sophomore center Ryan Williams. The Knights countered with a 13-5 run to lead 21-7 at the end of the quarter.
The tables turned, though, where Fremont went on a 10-0 run in the first 3:43 of the second quarter. Mitch Hahn hit a free throw, then missed a second and followed it up with a put back. Matt Hahn hit a three on the next Tiger possession and Noah Voss hit a pair of free throws, while Voss drove and scored to pull Fremont within four at 21-17 with 4:17 left in the first half.
Day then scored on a three point play to spark a 7-3 Southeast run to finish the first half with the Knights holding on to a 28-20 lead.
Southeast outscored Fremont 26-11 in the third quarter and kept themselves out of reach the rest of the game.
Day led the Knights with a game high 22 points, 14 of which came during the second half. Beamon added 17 and Peterson scored 12 to help Southeast.
Matt Hahn led Fremont (5-4) with 17 points, Mitch Hahn chipped in 10 points while Kenny Bristol's 10 points all came from the free throw line.
