- BOYS BASKETBALL: Waverly Rallies To Overcome Elkhorn Run
By Jeff Motz
WAVERLY---A 16-2 rally seemed to be a minor bump in the road for the Waverly boys basketball team on Friday night.
The Vikings overcame the Elkhorn run late in the first half and rallied by hitting free throws late to earn a 44-38 victory over the Antlers at Waverly High School.
A 21-8 Viking lead diminished early in the second quarter when Elkhorn mounted the 16-2 run sparked by an Alec Cowger lay up. Ben Hass then scored on a fastbreak and Cowger added another lay up and a three-pointer. Sophomore guard Jacob Uhing hit a three-pointer to pull Elkhorn to within one and Cowger hit another mid-range jumper before hitting a turnaround lay in for a 24-23 halftime lead.
Waverly (1-1) got an early lead in the third quarter before Elkhorn jumped ahead 31-28 with under 30 seconds left. Viking sophomore guard Ben Warner hit a 22-footer as time was expiring in the quarter that tied the game at 31.
The Vikings took 40-37 lead on a Dayne Schlamann three-pointer with 1:32 to play. Warner became an important component down the stretch, hitting four three throws during an 11-1 Waverly run to seal the win.
Dylan Janecek, the only returning starter, led the Vikings with 16 points, 12 of which came in the first half. Warner added 13 points in the vicotry. Cowger scored all of his 13 points in the first half for Elkhorn and got help from Caleb Craven's 10 points in the losing effort.
