12/05/2013 - BOYS BASKETBALL: Cold Weather Doesn't Cool Off Prep's Three-point Shooting Against Silver Hawks

By Jeff Motz

OMAHA---Outside of Omaha Creighton Prep's Heider Center Thursday night, north winds made the temperature unbearable for anyone to stand.  Inside was a much different story for the Junior Jays with hot perimeter shooting.

Connected on seven three-pointers in the first half, Prep took out Lincoln Southwest early and never looked back while on their way to a 64-26 victory over the Silver Hawks in the season opener for both boys basketball teams.

Four of the seven three-point shots made by the Class A sixth-ranked Junior Jays came from junior guard Tommy Pritchard, who finished with a game-high 18 points, by helping Prep to an early 9-2 lead and finishing out the opening quarter ahead 19-6.

A 19-7 second quarter run extended Prep's lead to 38-19 at halftime.  What also helped was the Junior Jays' 2-2-1 full court trapping press that took Southwest out of the game offensively.  The Silver Hawks only managed to hit three field goals in the first half.

Chad Witecy was the only other Prep player in double figures with 10 points, seven of which came in the first half.

Avery Prai was Southwest's highest scorer, with eight points, including two second-half three pointers.
