11/26/2013 - From The Press Box: Omaha North Shines Bright On Cold Night at Memorial Stadium

 Mission accomplished!

That's what players and coaches on the Omaha North football team likely said following Tuesday night's 23-21 victory over Omaha Westside to win their first Class A state title under the playoff system.

North, the 2012 runner-up, had a year to wait to get back to the championship game and it wasn't an easy road.  It was bumpy especially at Grand Island, when North forced two key turnovers late in the game and held on to win 39-34 over the Islanders to get back to the title game.

Head coach Larry Martin is the architect of this Viking football program, putting together great runners in Calvin Strong and JaVaughn Perkins.  Payton Nelson is an established quarterback, capable of throwing and running the ball.  Cole Bixler's heroics against Grand Island certainly kept the dream season alive for North.  Good chemistry and talent can go a long way.

As we close the 2013 chapter of high school football in Nebraska, a brief glimpse to next fall shows North and Westside back in the hunt for gold.  A great game to finish a season where there were lopsided wins across Class A.

Giving Thanks

This Thanksgiving, I'm very thankful for my own family for their love and understanding to be away most Friday nights during the fall and winter months.  I'm also thankful for the other crew members of LincolnPrepSports.com.

John Harris, a man that has the definite gift of gab and is able to break down plays during each game.  He's come a long way with his play-by-play and continues to get better.

Dick Janda.  What can I say about the same man that all those years ago I used to watch do the sports on KOLN-KGIN TV.  A true pro.  He's stepped up the last few months to help cover games on the web and will make a couple of appearances during the basketball season.

Ben Hurt.  He's been around LincolnPrepSports.com, since the inaugural football broadcast in 2004.  That same year, we witnessed the greatest finish to a high school football championship game, when Michael Millard caught a touchdown pass late in the game to give Pius X a 14-9 victory over McCook in the Class B title game.  Ben and I grew up in northeast Lincoln and continue to be friends to this day.

Reid Kilmer and Max Baker.  These two young men are interns from UNL who are developing a passion to become sports broadcasters.  It didn't take long for them to pick up the headsets and start calling games on their own.  They'll likely be around for basketball, too.

A huge thanks to our sponsors and visitors to the site.  We've had this going strong for 10 years and look to continue for another 10 and beyond.
