- FOOTBALL: Bearcat Ground Game, Penalties Costly For Gators
By Jeff Motz
Kearney's football team ran the ball at all costs Friday night and it paid off.
The Bearcats racked up 226 yards on the ground and broke through a Lincoln North Star defensive line to earn a 28-10 victory at Lincoln High's Beechner Athletic Complex. The win ultimately gives Kearney a spot in the post-season's Class A playoffs starting in two weeks.
With a 14-10 Kearney lead coming into the fourth quarter, North Star kept within reach until Bearcat running back Matt Koester scored two touchdowns to seal the win. Koester had 21 carries for 124 yards on the night.
Tyler Gillen wasted no time sparking the Kearney offense. A forced fumble by Gillen set up a short 32-yard drive capped off by a 16-yard run for Gillen. On Kearney's next possession, a short drive was topped with a Gillen 24-hour scoring run.
North Star (4-4) responded with two kickoff returns for good field positioning. The first one set up an 11-yard touchdown run from sophomore quarterback Trevin Ball. North Star's Alex Stogdill nailed a 30-yard field goal in the first quarter and for the next two quarters, it was a struggle for possession of the ball.
North Star's offense will limited to just 116-yards of total offense.
