10/10/2013 - FOOTBALL: Islanders Offense Gets Head Start On Navigators

By Jeff Motz

Grand Island's offensive mix of passing and running took off early, but not without a fight from Lincoln North Star.

The Islanders used a balanced attack to earn a 34-14 victory over the Navigators Thursday night at Seacrest Field.

On their first drive, Grand Island (6-1) capped off a 61-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run from quarterback Pierce Almond.  They followed that with another scoring drive, this one from eight yards out on a run from running back Andrew Rojas that gave the Islanders a 14-0 first quarter lead.

North Star (4-3) shook off the slow start and put together a balanced 80-yard drive.  After a big gain to midfield, Gator quarterback Brook Bolles later found tight end Zach Jackson for a pass completion to the Grand Island one-yard line.  That set up an Austin Rose one-yard scoring run, putting North Star within reach at 14-7 with 9:09 left in the half.

Wasting no time, Grand Island utilized another scoring drive, ending with a one-hand, nine-yard touchdown cash from Kevin Cahoy.  North Star countered with another scoring drive as Bolles found Logan Broeker on a six-yard scoring strike, keeping the Gators within reach at 21-14.

Sustaining drives worked in favor of Grand Island.  One drive forced the Islanders to settle for a Brenden Wentling 21-yard field goal for a 24-14 early third quarter lead.  With a minute left, Almond found Trevor Wojtalewicz for a 25-yard touchdown pass putting Grand Island ahead 31-14 lead.

Wentling added a 47-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter for a 34-14 Islander lead, putting the game out of reach for North Star.
