09/28/2013 - FOOTBALL: Rugged Norfolk Rolls Past Pius X

By Jeff Motz

Aggressive is the one word to summarize the Norfolk defense.  Period.

That spelled trouble for Lincoln Pius X's offense, as the Panthers met the Thunderbolt ball carriers at the point of attack and held off a late surge as Norfolk won 38-14 Friday night at Aldrich Field.

The Norfolk blitz knocked Pius X's starting quarterback Zach Pettit out of the game in the first half.  It was simply one of those nights.

The Panther defense got help from the offense, as Kyle Temple settled for a 22-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead.  Norfolk, who is now 4-1, scored on a 16-yard touchdown pass to Colin Schwartz for a 10-0 first quarter lead.

Norfolk's starting quarterback, sophomore Gunner Fuelberth, then scored on a one-yard run to extend the Panther lead to a 17-0 lead with 8:32 left in the first half.

After a Interception picked up by Norfolk, Hayden Johnson runs it in from six-yards for a 24-0 Panther lead.  A forced fumble allows Norfolk to recover the ball at the Pius X 11-yard line.  That set up a short, 3-yard scoring run from Johnson.

Pius (3-2) avoided the shutout when Anderson found Appleget with a 27-yard TD pass with 2:29 left.  Back up Norfolk quarterback Chase Hopper broke free for a 54-yard touchdown run on the next drive.

The Thunderbolts managed to tack on one final scoring drive, on a first-play from scrimmage with an 80-yard touchdown pass to Appleget.

Fuelberth was 14-of-24 passing for 154 yards, throwing for one and scoring on a touchdown run.  Appleget's five catches for 122 yards stood out for Pius X in the losing effort.
