- FOOTBALL: Burke's Defense Puts Rockets Away In Second Half
By Jeff Motz
With a 14-0 lead at halftime, Omaha Burke kept Lincoln Northeast within reach.
But after the Rockets force an early turnover in the second half, the Bulldogs force a three and out and went on to score 21 points to earn a 35-0 victory Friday night at Seacrest Field.
However, the Burke defense was the highlight of the night.
Safety Rodney Williams had two interceptions and Trey Carr's pick in the first quarter set up a 78-yard scoring drive that was finished on a 19-yard touchdown run from running back Logan Gier for an early 7-0 Bulldog lead.
Burke (3-1) continued to utilize their defense and stopped Northeast running back Mikiah Slade for having a big game. He was held to negative three-yards on 16 attempts. The Bulldogs blitzed the Rocket backfield, led by Robbie Simpson and Josh Tate.
Quarterback Alex Curbeam scored on a nine-yard run just before halftime to boost the Burke lead to 14-0. Touchdown runs from Colton Hough, Williams and a 29-yard scoring toss from Curbeam to Carr put the game away for the Bulldogs.
Northeast (1-3) saw receiver Trent Robbins make five catches for 52-yards. Burke finished the night with 295-yards on the ground.
