09/12/2013 - FOOTBALL: Bearcats Roll In Second Half Past Silver Hawks

By Jeff Motz

The Kearney football team arrived in Lincoln Thursday evening looking to make their 2-and-half hour trip worthwhile.

It took about 32 minutes of game time to establish momentum and pull out a 31-14 victory over Lincoln Southwest at Seacrest Field. It's the Bearcats first win of the season, after losing 35-18 at home to Norfolk last week and 22-19 at Lincoln Pius X to open the season.

Southwest struck first, when Tyler Bordeaux intercepted a Jacob White pass that set up a three-yard touchdown run from Noah Lazaro for a 7-0 lead.  On the ensuing kickoff, Kearney's Tyler Gillen returned the ball 93-yards for a touchdown to tie the game at seven.

A defensive struggle in the first half, Southwest had missed two field goal attempts from 47-yards out, while Kearney missed a 34-yarder just before halftime.

The Silver Hawks' (1-2) initial drive of the second half stalls with another missed field goal attempt, but the Bearcats drove deep and couldn't get into the end zone.  After Corey Williams' interception to set up another Southwest drive, the first play results in a forced fumble recovery for Kearney's Justin Liveringhouse.  A few plays later, Treygan Gowen's 17-yard field goal put the Bearcats ahead 10-7 with 4:43 left in the third quarter.

Following another Southwest three-and-out, Kearney set up a quick drive that ended when quarterback Peyton Pocock threw a swing pass to running back Tylar Bohlke for a 77-yard touchdown for a 17-7 lead.

The Bearcats' momentum didn't subside in the fourth quarter.  Running back Matt Koester scored on a 10-yard run and Gillen broke tackles for a 43-yard touchdown run that put Kearney ahead for good at 31-7 with 4:51 remaining.

Southwest managed add one more touchdown with a short one-yard run from Bordeaux.

Kearney managed to rack up 322 yards of total offense to Southwest's 295.
