- FOOTBALL: Monarchs Capitalize On Spartan Mistakes
By Jeff Motz
Papillion-LaVista struck first, Lincoln East returned the favor.
But the Monarchs wouldn't stay down the entire night, as they rattled off 24 unanswered points to earn a 31-10 victory over the Spartans in high school football Thursday at Seacrest Field.
Returning all-state quarterback Alec Ditoro scored on a 6-yard touchdown run to cap the 69-yard opening driver for Papillion-LaVista. Then East struck back on the first play from scrimmage on the very next series on a 55-yard touchdown run from running back Mason Tyrell with 5:02 left in the first quarter for a 7-7 game.
East (1-1) went up 10-7 on a Sam Kohler 32-yard field goal to start the second quarter. The Spartans would be plagued by several procedure penalties and Papillion-LaVista would expose the East defense through big gains on the around and air.
Ditoro threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to receiver Lucas Hostetler to put Papio back ahead 14-10 with 9:30 remaining in the first half. The Monarchs added a 28-yard field goal from Gage Romans to take a 17-10 halftime lead.
Papio (1-1) would go to the air with Ditoro finding Hostetler on a 53-yard touchdown pass to extend the Monarch lead at 24-10 halfway through the third quarter. With East's defense close to forcing Papillion-LaVista to give the ball back on downs, Ditoro responded on a 4th down play with a 22-yard touchdown run for the final scoring drive of the game with 6:18 to play.
East had several opportunities to capitalize on several personal foul penalties assessed against the Monarchs, but could not sustain any drives.
