08/29/2013 - Air Attack Propels Grand Island Past Rockets

The heat seemed to have no affect on Grand Island's offense Thursday night.

Three straight times, the Islanders went to the air for a trio of touchdowns in the first quarter en route to a 54-14 victory over Lincoln Northeast at Seacrest Field.

Receiver Trevor Wojtalewicz caught two touchdown passes out of the shoot for the Islanders.  After Grand Island's three first quarter touchdowns, Northeast bounced back by taking to the air and scored when quarterback Derrick Curtis found Mikiah Slade on an 80-yard touchdown pass.

Three plays into the fourth Grand Island drive, the Rockets got a break when defensive end Mitchell Bruns intercepted a tipped pass and ran 50-yards for a touchdown to put Northeast within a scoring strike at 21-14 with 17 seconds left in the first quarter.

After a 30-yard field goal from Brendan Wentling, Grand Island continued to build back momentum.  Andrew Rojas scored on a five-yard run, then Tyler Shrine recovered a Northeast fumble on the ensuing kickoff.  Quarterback Pierce Almond then scored on a two-yard run for a 37-14 halftime lead.

Two more touchdowns and a field goal is all Grand Island picked up in the second half.  Northeast had a scare in the fourth quarter when senior lineman Taylor Shaw got hurt and had to be carried off on a stretcher to the hospital.

Earlier in the week, senior wide receiver Zach Spencer was sidelined with a serious injury he suffered in practice on Monday.  He remained hospitalized as of Thursday evening.

Northeast (0-1) faces Lincoln North Star in an intra-city game next Friday at Seacrest Field.  Grand Island has their home-opener next Friday against Lincoln Southwest.
