05/18/2013 - From The Press Box: Titans put cherry on top of whip cream of a school year

It's not an easy task to have teams in several sports from one school competing for state championships in a single school year.

At Norris High School, it's become commonplace.

The Titans competed for the state football championship last fall, the girls basketball title in March and the state baseball title last Thursday.  Of the three, Norris walked away with the Class B baseball crown with a 3-2 thrilling victory over defending champ Lincoln Pius X.

The athletic department at Norris appears to be heading in the right direction.  For a school known for their basketball success, football is turning the corner and baseball has arrived at point.

Following the 2-1 loss to Pius X in the 2012 Class B title game, the Titans had most of their starters returning for this year's campaign.  Two Nebraska baseball recruits, Jakson Reetz and Byron Hood, along with shortstop Trey Hair all took turns pitching through the season and were among the state's best hitters.  Reetz and Hood are back for one more high school season.

Pius X and Lincoln Southwest have nothing to hang their heads about.  Both qualified for state and stood out as two of the top teams from Lincoln this season.  North Star and Southeast were right behind with great teams.  Pius X finished their season with only three losses, considering they lost 10 games in 2012 and captured the Class B title.

The same three players were on the runner-up team in football and could put Norris in the forefront of the Class B race in 2013.  Basketball fell just short of qualifying for state this past winter, but could be in contention for a state tourney berth next season.

In all, the 2012-2013 season for high school athletics in the Lincoln area was successful.  Just think, we're about three months away from the start of two-a-days for high school football!

By the way, Legion baseball coverage starts next week.
