- CLASS B STATE BASEBALL: Felber's RBI Single Seals Win For Pius X
By Jeff Motz
Cole Felber had been in the Lincoln Pius X starting line up in districts, but on Saturday he came in to pinch hit for the Thunderbolts.
It paid off.
The junior came in to hit in the bottom of the seventh with runners at first and second hit an RBI single to give Pius X a 3-2 victory over Gretna in the opening round of the 2013 NSAA Class B State Baseball Tournament at Haymarket Park.
The Thunderbolts (16-1) led off the inning with Tom Schneider drawing a walk and after Mike Helman grounded out followed by a Rex Raetz strikeout, Tony McWilliams was hit by a pitch.
Felber then singled to left field to drive in Schneider from second to earn the win.
After Pius jumped ahead 1-0 in the third when Schneider doubled and later scored off of a throwing error by Gretna shortstop Caleb Koch, allowing McWilliams to reach base.
A bunt single allowed Mike Helman to reach base in the fifth and his courtesy runner Nolan Walker later scored when McWilliams reached on an infield single and throwing error Gretna third baseman Trent Brosdahl for a 2-0 Thunderbolt lead.
Gretna (11-7) rallied in the sixth, when Zach Howell singled and later scored. Jake Derr also singled and scored in the inning.
Pius X now plays Omaha Gross in the winner's bracket quarterfinal Monday at 7pm at Haymarket Park. Gretna plays an elimination game Monday night.
