PAPILLION -- Papillion-LaVista South struck early and managed to hang on in the Class A State Baseball tournament opener with Lincoln Southwest.

The Titans (21-2) got three runs off four hits in the first inning to earn a 3-2 victory over the Silver Hawks Saturday morning at Werner Park.

Papio South got a double in the first inning from Sam Palensky, who then scored off a single from Josh Kiger.  Following a fly out from Chris May, Kiger scored off a double to centerfield from Grant Suponchick for a 2-0 lead.

Suponchick's courtesy runner, Michael Buell, then scored off a Zach Hansen single to give the Titans their final run of the game.

Southwest (12-13) had a short rally in the third inning, when Easton Edmund led off with a double and Joe Bechtle reached on a throwing error.  Edmund later scored after Logan Foster grounded out.  Brayden Young singled and moved Bechtle to third, who then scored off a Derek Glen single.

The Silver Hawks had opportunities to tie in the sixth and seventh innings.  Alex Jaeger's fly ball behind third base dropped and Jackson Rempe was forced out when Brent Kirsch recovered the ball and made the play.

Scott Honnens led off with a single in the seventh and was forced out after Edmund reached on a fielder's choice.  Bechtle then hit into a double play to end the game.

Southwest plays the loser between Omaha Burke and Millard South in an elimination game 4pm Monday at Fricke Field in Papillion.
