- DISTRICT BASEBALL: Pius X Breezes Past Beatrice in Semifinal
By Jeff Motz
The weather may have felt like it was early November, but the Lincoln Pius X baseball team was hotter than a July Nebraska afternoon.
With temperatures at 40 degrees at first pitch Saturday afternoon at Sherman Field, the Thunderbolts came out swinging and played good defense to shut out Beatrice 10-0 in five innings via the mercy rule.
The win puts Pius X (14-1) in the district title game Monday at 6pm.
Tony McWilliams tripled and later scored off a Cole Felder single to give Pius X a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The 'Bolts broke the game open in the second when Alex Schleppenbach singled and later scored off a hit from Matt Foley.
Tom Schneider then recorded a hit, but a throwing error allowed Foley to score and Schneider's courtesy runner, Nolan Walker, scored. Nolan Hakel was hit by a pitch and later scored off a single from Felber. After Jake Schleppenbach reached, Sam Raun singled and drove in two more runs putting Pius X ahead 7-0.
The Thunderbolts scored two more times in the fourth off two more Beatrice errors.
Perhaps the highlight of the game came in the Beatrice half of the fifth, when Pius X recorded a triple play.
With runners at first and second for the Orangemen, Andrew Hubka hit a ground ball to third with Tony McWilliams stepping on the bag for the force, threw to second to Jake Schleppenbach for the second out and over to Foley at first to record the third out.
Alex Schleppenbach, who went 3-for-3 at the plate, doubled to lead off in the fifth and scored the winning run off a hit from pinch hitter Tyler Hooper.
Schneider took the win for Pius X, who awaits the winner between Gretna and Seward.
Beatrice committed five errors in the game. Colton Adams took the loss for the Orangemen, who end their season at 4-12. Beatrice edged Thurston-Cuming County in the play in game Saturday morning by the final of 10-6.
