- HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: Wilson's Pitching Helps East's Batting In Victory over Gators
By Jeff Motz
Lincoln East junior Bryce Wilson proved Monday just how valuable he can be at the next level.
The left-handed pitcher had spent time on the junior varsity squad and after a game where he struck out 20 batters, his coaches felt he had earned a spot to start on the varsity.
Wilson struck out eight Lincoln North Star hitters, including seven of the first nine batters, to help the Spartans earn a 6-2 victory Monday afternoon at Sherman Field.
In five innings, Wilson allowed a run and a hit before relief pitcher Jake Snyder finished the game. East (5-5) got on the scoreboard in the top half of the first inning off a two-out single from designated hitter Shane Watteyne that drove in Hank Neal from third base.
In the third, the Spartans scored again, when Christian Biester walked and advanced to third on a single by Neal and scored off a line drive to centerfield from Eric Barton. Neal scored for the second time, after Watteyne reached on a North Star throwing error and Barton came home off a single from Jake Hohensee.
But the Gators (6-4) got a run in the bottom of the third after Brady Studnicka walked and advanced to second off a balk called on Wilson. Logan Broeker then walked and Studnicka scored off a single to right field from Alex Caruso.
East sealed the victory with a two-out, two-run single from Bryan Reimers in the top of the seventh. North Star's last-ditch effort in the bottom half of the inning had Tyler Coufal reaching on a fielder's choice, that scored Aaron Hayes.
Both teams have doubleheaders Tuesday, with East hosting Columbus at Den Hartog Field and North Star hosts Grand Island at Densmore Field.
