03/07/2013 - CLASS C1 BOYS STATE BASKETBALL: WAHOO TOO MUCH FOR LINCOLN CHRISTIAN
 By Jeff Motz

The patented Wahoo 1-3-1 zone reared it's ugly head Thursday afternoon at Pershing Center.

With it, came forced turnovers and points in transition as the top-ranked Warriors stayed undefeated and held off Lincoln Christian 55-35 in the first round of the NSAA Class C1 boys state basketball tournament.

Wahoo (27-0) got off to a 7-0 start behind a three-pointer from Brook Stuart and baskets from Ben Scheef and Tyler Kavan.  As the 1-3-1 zone forced double teams on the Crusaders, the Warriors outscored Christian 16-5 to end the first quarter.

A 14-5 second quarter run extended the Wahoo lead to 37-10 at halftime.  Lincoln Christian responded in the third quarter, outscoring the Warriors 17-12 behind 11 points from reserve forward Evan Mathers.

Wahoo slowly pulled away in the fourth, after Christian closed the gap to 51-33 with 3:44 left to play.

Abbott led Wahoo with a game-high 17 points, the only player in double figures for the Warriors.  Brandon Schipman scored eight of his 12 points in the final period to lead the Crusaders, who end their season at 17-10.

Wahoo's Jonathan Abbott (5) drives to the basket vs. Lincoln Christian Thursday in the C1 Boys State Basketball tournament at Pershing Center. Christian's Brandon Schipman (25) and Wahoo's Jacob Scheef (15) move in to rebound. (Jeff Motz/LincolnPrepSports.com)
