- A-6 District Girls Basketball: Northeast, Southwest Roll To Semifinal Victories
By Jeff Motz
After a slow start, Lincoln Northeast got regrouped and took off.
The Rockets sprinted out to a 33-17 halftime lead and held on for a 69-30 victory over Fremont in the A-6 girls basketball district semifinals Tuesday night at Lincoln Southwest.
Northeast (16-6) now faces Southwest (19-4) for the A-6 district championship Wednesday at 7pm for a shot at the NSAA Girls State Basketball Tournament next week.
Senior Devin Edwards led the Rocket charge scoring six of her 12 points in the first quarter to give Northeast a 15-8 lead. Junior Morgan Ewing led the Rockets with 15 points, including two three-pointers in the game. Rocket sophomore Tantashea Giger added 11 points.
Northeast led 51-25 at the end of the third quarter. The Rockets stymied the Tigers with a full-court press for much of the game. Northeast committed seven team fouls before the end of the first quarter, but Fremont couldn't connect on half of their free-throw attempts.
Kendall Niehaus led the Tigers with nine points.
LINCOLN SOUTHWEST 55, GRAND ISLAND 23
A combined 32-2 run between the second and third quarters set the tone for the game as Southwest cruised to their 20th win of the season.
Grand Island's Sarah Splattstoesser hit a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded at the end of the first quarter, that pulled the Islanders to within a possession at 14-11. But Southwest shut out Grand Island in the second quarter 14-0 for a 28-11 lead.
The Silver Hawks racked up 12 more points to begin the second half, but a basket by Sydney Armstrong helped Grand Island end the 26-0 run with 3:12 left in the third, as the Islanders trailed 40-13.
McKenna Dodd led Southwest with 14 points, while Creighton recruit Lauren Works added 13 points in the victory.
Southwest has won the last two games they played against Northeast, most recently winning 44-37 at Northeast's Ed Johnson Gym on Feb. 1.
