- HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: Fifth Inning Proves Pivotal For East
By Jeff Motz
A four-run fifth inning proved to be pivotal for Lincoln East in their 9-7 victory over Lincoln Pius X Monday afternoon.
Third-baseman Ryan Schrad opened the inning with a triple, his second of the day, and later scored off a single from Alex Hulewicz. Tahner Pinkman got on base with a single.
But the Spartans (6-0) got a boost from senior outfielder Jared Nelson, who went 3-for-4 at the plate, including a two run-double that drove in Hulewicz and Pinkman that gave East an 8-3 advantage.
Pius X (3-3) tried to rally with a three-run sixth inning, off a two-run double from Ian Ritterbush. East added a run in the bottom of the sixth when Hank Neal scored of a single from Pinkman.
Tom Schneider doubled for Pius X to lead off in the seventh and later scored off a sacrifice fly from Ritterbush. East relief pitcher Kyle Warkow sealed the victory by striking out Chris Bodfield.
Connor Vidlock lasted five innings for East, giving up three runs and five hits before he was taken out of the game in the top of the sixth.
