WAVERLY---It's always nice to end your regular season with a win, especially if it's a team ranked ahead of you.
The Class B seventh-ranked Waverly girls basketball team earned a 48-37 win over third-ranked Beatrice Saturday afternoon. A big part of the Viking win could be attributed to the double-double from 6-1 sophomore center Olivia Boender, who scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed 17 rebounds.
Waverly (17-5) broke free from a 10-10 game after the first quarter by tallying nine points to end the first half with a 22-17 lead. Beatrice tied the game at 24 with 5:34 left behind a basket from Jill Faxon. But an 8-1 spurt from off a three-pointer from Boender and a three and layup from Allison Shipman helped Waverly to a 32-25 lead.
The Lady Orange got as close as five points in the fourth quarter, but the Vikings continued to dominate the rest of the game. Cierra Tjaden scored 11 points to help Waverly, while Shipman added 10 points.
Alicia Armstrong led Beatrice (16-3) with 11 points, while Faxon added 10 points in the loss.
