Confidence is one word to use in describing Cole Dworak. The 5-8 Lincoln Christian junior tipped away an pass and prevented a final shot from Fremont Bergan, as the Crusaders held off the Knights and survived to win 46-43 in the NSAA Boys Class C2 State Basketball Championship Saturday at the Devaney Sports Center.
The Crusaders (20-8), who qualified for State via a wildcard, won their fourth state title in school history and their first championship since 1999.
Dworak's pivotal defensive play came with eight seconds left in the game, when he tipped the ball away off an inbounds pass from Bergan's Josh Boggs. The ball came loose and Bergan's Matt Sleister grabbed the ball to shoot a desperation shot, which was blocked by Dworak as the horn sounded.
Christian had to fend off a late comeback by Bergan. John Spellerberg nailed a three-pointer for the Knights and tied the game at 43 with 1:50 to go in the game. On the next Crusader possession, J.D. Freeman drove the baseline and scored a layup for a 45-43 lead.
Freeman then converted on the first of two free-throws with 15 seconds left that sealed the scoring. Junior Levi Gipson led Christian with 15 points, with eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Dworak added 13 points for the state champions.
Spencer Morrissey led Bergan (22-6) with 23 points and Spellerberg added 11 points in the loss.
