12/11/2009 - HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL: SEWARD WINS REMATCH OF CLASS B TITLE GAME OVER PIUS X

Defending Class B state champion Seward won its 28th straight girls basketball game 45-40 at No. 6 Lincoln Pius X on Friday night.

But the host Thunderbolts never made the heavily favored Bluejays feel comfortable in the rematch of last year's state tournament finals.

Back-to-back traditional three-point plays by Alex Grant brought Pius X as close as 34-31 with 4:11 left in the game. Seward, however, responded with an 8-2 spurt as sophomore guard Beth Bohuslavsky's three-point play with 1:33 remaining gave the Jays (3-0) an untouchable 42-33 edge.

While Seward returned everyone from last year's team, Grant is Pius X's lone starter back.

"Pius played like a veteran group, I give them a lot of credit," Seward coach Tom Tvrdy said. "They were well-prepared offensively and played great defense. I think they showed us a few areas that we need to improve on."

Emily Cady, a 6-2 junior all-stater, paced Seward with eight points. Freshman guard Hannah Tvrdy, the coach's daughter, added eight, including a pair of three-pointers. Seward, which had 14 three-pointers in a win over C-1 No. 7 Wahoo last weekend, managed just three against Pius X (0-2).

Grant, a 5-10 senior who had offseason ACL surgery, led the Bolts with 15 points, 11 of which came in the final eight minutes. Another 5-10 senior, Kelsey Sparks, added 11 points and topped a 24-17 Pius X rebounding edge with eight boards.
