- Prep's finish vs. Bryan the best of the tourney

The buzzer-beater bug must be catching on at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Last Saturday night, Crofton's Amber Hegge banked a three-pointer at the buzzer to give her team their third-straight Class C-1 girls state basketball title against Norfolk Catholic. Five days later, Omaha Creighton Prep's Ted Stessman does the same thing, but only from a foot from the basket to upset No. 1 seed Omaha Bryan 50-49 in the opening game of the Class A State Boys Basketball tournament.
Stessman's winning tip-in came after his first attempt failed and a try from forward Matt Harmon bounced off the rim, setting up the final shot and perhaps the best finish to a Boys tournament game in a long time.
Some are speculating that the tip in was way after the buzzer, but with no instant replay rule in effect no one will ever know for sure.
Prep now faces nemesis Omaha Central in the 9:30 semi-final game Friday at the Devaney Center, after the Eagles came from behind to beat Millard North 72-55. This should make for an interesting game in how both teams match up with one another. Maybe this "Metro State Tournament" isn't so bad after all. But I still much prefer at least one Lincoln team in the mix.
If you read my previous article, you noticed I had Norfolk and Bryan playing each other again for the Class A Title with the Panthers winning. Well, I'm changing it over to Prep to prevail over Central and Westside over Bellevue West in the semi-finals to set up an epic battle between the Junior Jays and the Warriors. In the meantime, I'll sit back and enjoy the fun.
