02/24/2007 - Pack up the bus, we're heading to State!!!

Three months ago, the sound of basketballs bouncing in the gyms across the state were being heard for the first time in nearly nine months.  Now, like the windspeed of a springtime tornado, we're gearing up for another trip to the Devaney Sports Center for the first of two weekends of the State High School Basketball Tournament.

The Girls take center stage starting Thursday and only six teams out of six classes will be crowned state champions for a year.  Yeah, yeah....I know.  You're probably saying to yourself, "well.....duh, Jeff."  But this season is very special for a couple of reasons.   First, the Class A tournament is expected to bring in the state's top players in Dominique Kelley from Lincoln Northeast, K.K. Houser from Lincoln Southeast, Kelsey Woodard and Brooke Delano from Bellevue West, and Kelsey Newman from Lincoln East.  Omaha Westside and Lincoln Northeast are being picked by some folks to play for the championship.  Secondly, for the first time in more than a decade, South Sioux City will not be playing for a Class B Championship and were denied another appearance at the State Tournament.  This should help make way for the highly anticipated matchup of undefeated teams in Gretna and Crete.

Lincoln has three teams (Northeast, Southeast and East) representing Class A, while the metro has Bellevue East, Bellevue West, Millard West and Omaha Westside and outstate has Grand Island.  Pius X is the lone Lincoln team in the Class B tourney, while Malcolm represents Lancaster County in C-2.  Being a Northeast alum, I know deep down where my heart is at, BUT I'm rooting on for all of our area teams to be successful and achieve their dreams of winning the coveted state championship trophy.  It's time to let the rest of the state know that the capital city has some of the best basketball talent around.

Hopefully, the time change to all the tournament games, including championship Saturday, don't mess up the attendance figures too much.  I'm too used to having Class A at 1:30pm.  Personally, I think it should be the grand finale game of the six title games and be played at 9pm.  But that's for another day.  Again, congratulations and good luck to all of the Lincoln area teams and to other participants of the Girls and Boys State Basketball Tournament.
