02/05/2007 - Lincoln teams heading to State Bowling Tourney

Lincoln Public and Parochial Schools will be well-represented when the 2007 Nebraska High School Bowling Federation State Championship Tournament kicks off, February 10-11, at Lincoln’s Sun Valley Lanes.
Lincoln Northeast, Southeast, North Star, East, and Lincoln High are part of the  eight-team Class A Boys field. Lincoln High is the defending Class A champ and Northeast was last year’s runner-up. North Star and Southeast were 1-2 in A-1 District competition, while Lincoln High was the A-2 runner-up at this year’s District. Southeast and East advance to this year’s tournament as Wild Card competitors.
In the Class A Girls field, Lincoln Northeast, North Star, Lincoln High, Southeast, East, and Southwest join Grand Island and Columbus in the field of eight. In a reverse of the Boys A-1 District, Southeast and North Star girls were 1-2 in District competition. Lincoln High was also the girls A-2 District champion. Southwest, East, and last year’s Class A Girls champ, Northeast advance as Wild Cards.
Pius X comes into the State Championship as a Class B Wild Card entry. Top shooters for the squad at Districts were Greg Portsche and BJ Swearer, averaging 174 a173 respectively.
Classes A & B begin competition Saturday at 8am, with a four-game block and a best 3 out of 5 single-elimination round using the Baker format. Saturday’s competition will narrow the field down to the two teams from each Class that will compete for the championship at Sun Valley Lanes on Sunday. Admission on Saturday is $5.
Admission to Sunday’s finals will be $5 per session or $10 for an all-day pass
Again this year, all final matches will take place in an “arena-style” environment. Bleacher seating will be available along side the championship pair of lanes and directly behind the bowler’s area. The entire “arena” will be curtained off from view by the rest of the bowling center.
NET2, Nebraska Public Television, will televise this year’s finals. The NET2 broadcast will air one week later on Sunday, February 18. Broadcast times for the boys’ finals will begin at 4:30pm. The girls’ competition will air on the same day beginning at Noon
The Nebraska High School Bowling Federation’s mission is to provide all High School students with an opportunity to experience the spirit of team competition and community pride while participating in a lifelong sport, while at the same time elevating the sport of bowling through a state recognized varsity level bowling program for high school students.
