01/29/2007 - Could it be a reality: No Lincoln teams at State?

Those who were around Class A Lincoln high school basketball in 1992 would definitely like to erase that from the memory bank. That was the year that no Lincoln Public Schools team reached the Boys State Basketball Tournament in nearly 30 years. It could happen again this year, with the way districts and the wild card standings play out.

Lincoln Northeast (12-3) is leading the pack from the capital city in wild card points, with 42.400 points, behind Omaha Creighton Prep (10-6). Despite the overall records, Prep's strength of schedule and victories over top ten opponents put them ahead of Northeast (who has defeated three Metro teams this season). The Rockets could be a contender for a wild-card berth into the State Tournament, if they hadn't lost to 3-13 Lincoln North Star in overtime on December 21st or to 7-10 Lincoln Southwest during the Heartland Athletic Conference Holiday Tournament. Those two losses has put the Rockets at a disadvantage and facing an uphill battle in the A-1 district against three top ten teams or contenders.

Lincoln Southeast is also in dire straits when it comes to getting a shot at State. All three losses the Knights have suffered this year have been to metro teams (Omaha Westside, Papillion-LaVista, and Omaha Creighton Prep). Southeast happens to be in the same district as Northeast, along with Omaha Central, Omaha North and Lincoln Southwest. For Lincoln's sake and reputation as a basketball power, let's all hope that we get an all-Lincoln A-1 district final.

Here are the Wild-Card Standings for 1-29-07:

  • Omaha Bryan (15-1), 44.4375
  • Norfolk (13-3), 43.2500
