A total mismatch is the perfect description for what took place on the basketball court Friday night between Class A top-ranked Lincoln Northeast and Class B's Lincoln Pius X. The Rockets went inside and got 16 points, 10 rebounds and eight block shots from 6-8 junior center Wendell Faines to beat the Thunderbolts 53-38 in front of an estimated crowd of 1,200 at Northeast's Ed Johnson Gym. Northeast jetted out a 14-0 run before Pius' Brock Sutton gave the Bolts their first three points with 25 seconds left in the first quarter and trailed 14-3 heading to the 2nd quarter.
The Rockets outscored the Bolts 15-8 in the 2nd quarter to jump ahead 29-11 at halftime. But the second half wasn't as pretty as the first half for Northeast. After leading by as much as 21 points in the 3rd quarter, Northeast's lead was slightly trimmed with Brock Sutton and Corbin Van Slyke hitting some baskets for Pius X to cut their deficit down to 41-25 at the end of the period. The Bolts as close as 11 points with three minutes remaining in the game, but it wasn't enough as the Rockets held on for the win. Pius' defense could not match up on the inside against Faines, trying to use three defenders to stop the Rocket center on several occasions. Plain and simple, size and quickness was the difference in the game. All-stater Andrew Bridger scored 11 points and Jerry Vaughn-Taylor finished with 10 points in the Northeast win. Van Slyke led Pius X with 10 points.
