01/27/2018 - BOYS BASKETBALL: Overtime Run Carries Southwest Past Westside

By Jeff Motz

Lincoln Southwest managed to take immediate control of overtime, after going back and forth with Omaha Westside in the final eight minutes of regulation.

The Silver Hawks went on a 15-4 run in the extra frame to beat the Warriors 66-55 in front of nearly 1,000 fans Saturday night at Southwest High School.

Alex Hunzeker sparked the late surge for the Silver Hawks.  He scored on a layup to tie the game at 51 with 1:42 left in regulation.  Then Southwest got the ball back when Westside couldn't score and held the ball for more than a minute, then went to Hunzeker for a three as time was running out.  His shot from the left corner bounced off the rim, forcing overtime.

Out of the shoot to start the extra period, the Silver Hawks went back to Hunzeker for a three and this time he connected.  Then Southwest increased their lead on a layup from TaeVyn Grixby and Collin Kohl scored a layup in transition for a 7-0 run and a 58-51 lead with with 2:15 left in OT.

JaQuaylon Mays then added a layup and Hunzeker scored again to complete an 11-0 advantage in the extra frame.

Westside (7-10) had a strong start and jumped out to a 20-18 first quarter lead.  The Warriors jumped ahead 31-25 with 4:08 left in the 2nd quarter off a three-pointer from Cal Weidemann.

Southwest (12-5) responded with Kohl's long range shooting.  He hit a three pointer that helped out a 9-4 finish to the half with Westside still ahead 35-34.

Kohl led all scorers with 20 points, including four three-pointers, while Mays finished with 18 and Hunzeker added 10 in the Silver Hawks victory.

Jadin Booth led a scrappy Westside team with 18 points, while 6-6 junior forward Chase Thompson added 15 points and PJ Ngambi added 10 in the loss.
