12/23/2017 - From The Press Box: Christmas Time Followed By Hoops Action
From The Press BoxWe'll get a white Christmas after all!

If you know me, I'm not too keen on snow or winter weather, in general.  But if it needs to snow at anytime, Christmas would be it.

I hope you and your family are taking time to enjoy each others company while celebrating one of the joyous times of the year.  Whether it's soup and sandwiches, turkey, brunch or steaks and salmon, feast until you can't eat another bite  Then get back out on your workout routine to burn off all those calories.

Once all of the holiday fun is over, you can enjoy some great basketball later in the week!

The Heartland Athletic Conference tournament is full of great teams this year.  Lincoln East is the No. 1 seed of the tournament for the boys and girls.  Something tells me, though, this won't nearly be as easy as it may have been in the last couple of years for the Spartan boys.

While East squares off against No. 8 seed and winless Lincoln Northeast, their opponent in the next round (either No. 4 Lincoln High and No. 5 Lincoln Southwest) may pose as their biggest threat yet.

On the other side, Grand Island is a No. 2 seed and has suffered only one loss (45-43 at the hands of East).  The Islanders square off against No. 7 seed Lincoln Southeast (another winless squad) with the likelihood of facing either Lincoln North Star or Fremont.

It would not surprise me to see an East/Grand Island HAC championship game, but wouldn't be surprised if an upset was made along the way to set up a different setting for the conference title.

With the girls bracket, East may have some challenges that lie ahead, too.

Southeast has played better recently and Fremont also has been improving after their season opening loss to the Spartans.

Lincoln High, though, has come out of nowhere and shown just how tough they are early this season.  Quality wins include Northeast and Southwest, both of whom were pre-season rated in the top five.

This girls HAC tourney should be one to enjoy, as well.

As we close the book on another year, looking back at 2017 there were highs and lows in high school sports in Lincoln.

Southwest won their first Class A girls state basketball title in their very first tournament appearance.  To the best of my knowledge, that hasn't been done since East won the first girls basketball title in 1977.  East did that on the boys side in 1971.

Lincoln High's up-tempo style of offense in football was the talk of the town, unfortunately cut off in the first round of the Class A playoff for the second-straight year.

Congrats to the Lincoln Southwest boys tennis team for winning the Class A team crown!

Let's hope 2018 is full of more joy and success for everyone.
