03/04/2017 - CLASS B GIRLS BASKETBALL: Big Shots Lift South Sioux City Past Norris In Title Game

By Jeff Motz

South Sioux City managed to survive a tight fourth quarter and held on for a 48-44 victory over Norris Saturday in the Class B Girls State Basketball championship at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

The Cardinals (26-2) won their first state title since 2008.  The Titans (19-7) finished runner-up for the third time in five seasons.

South Sioux City led 22-20 at halftime.  Then Norris regained control 28-26 when Valerie Gabel scored on a short-range basket with 4:10 in the 3rd.  But Kori Fischer, who hit three three-pointers in the game, gave the lead back to the Cardinals on the first three-pointer with 3:44 left.

The lead changed two more times, with South Sioux City leading 33-31 heading to the fourth quarter.

Anna Barent, who led Norris with 11 points, scored from close range to push Norris ahead 36-35, then Fischer answered with a three-pointer to regain the lead for South Sioux City.

Barent sank two more free throws for Norris, then South Sioux City answered two possessions later, as senior center Carissa Powell scored from underneath to give the Cardinals a 40-38 lead with 3:44 left.

Sullivan hit one of two free throws to narrow Norris' deficit to one, but Fischer answered with another deep three-pointer that pushed the Cardinals lead to 43-39.

South Sioux City led by five after one of two free throws from Marybeth Rasmussen, when Norris guard Maddie Ramsey hit a three-pointer with 18.7 seconds left to cut the deficit to 46-44.

After a timeout, the Titans got a break when Sullivan stole an inbounds pass and missed on two chances to score from close range.

McKenna Sims hit two free throws to seal the win with 3.7 seconds remaining.

Powell led all scorers with 14 points, while Fischer and Sims each added 11 points for South Sioux City.

Sullivan helped Norris in the loss with 10 points.
