- BOYS BASKETBALL: Late Free Throws Lift Millard North Over East High
By Jeff Motz
There was a post season feel at the Lincoln East gym Thursday night top open up the boys basketball season.
The Class A 4th-ranked Spartans rallied late in the game but came up short, as Millard North won 68-66.
Bret Porter hit two free throws with three seconds left to seal the win for the Mustangs. East's Hunter McPhail launched up a desperation three-pointer that bounced off the rim at the Buzzer.
Millard North (1-0) led 53-46 to start the fourth quarter before East started to chip away. Pete Ackerman, who scored 11 points, scored a basket off a series of possession changes off a steal to pull the Spartans to within four of the Mustangs at 56-52. Then with 1:07 left, East tied the game at 64 when Sam Griesel hit a three pointer.
Khor Thok answered on the other end for Millard North with a basket to put the Mustangs back up by two, but Ackerman answered on the other end with a game tying layup with 13 second left. But Ackerman fouled Porter on the other end of the floor to set up the game winning free throws.
East (0-1) trailed 20-16 after the first quarter and led several times in the second quarter, as much as 30-27 before Millard North rallied and capped off a 6-0 run on a Nick Ferrarini break away dunk before halftime.
Ferrarini led all scorers with 21 points for the Mustangs, while Porter added 20 points in the win. East was led by 6-7 junior forward Jordan Janssen with 20 points, while Hayden Barrett scored 14 points before fouling out.
