02/06/2016 - BOYS BASKETBALL: McHam's Buzzer Beater Helps Christian Edge Aquinas

By Kellan Heavican

Sophomore Mitch McHam hit a six-foot off balance jumper as time expired Saturday afternoon as the Lincoln Christian Crusaders prevailed over Aquinas 48-47.

Aquinas’s Tyler Vavrina missed the front of a one and one with 4:48 left in the game that left Aquinas with a 43-39 lead.  But jumpers from Isaac Olsen and a lay-in by Dylan Chicoine evened the game at 44.  Olsen, then hit a three to take a 46-43 lead.

The Crusaders left the door open after back-to-back turnovers with 1:20 and 55 seconds left. Lane Napier’s basket and Vavirna’s laup with 11 seconds left gave Aquinas a one-point advantage before the Crusader heroics.

Napier finished with a game-high 24 points and 20 came in the second half. James Kobza added 7 for Aquinas.

Isaac Olsen and Treyson Bigler led Lincoln Christian (6-13) with 14 and 10 respectively.  McHam finished with nine.

Sophomore Taytem Coleman used a hot hand in the first half hitting six three pointers for Lincoln Christian on Saturday afternoon.

Aquinas (7-12) fell behind 18-4 before scoring six straight to cut the Crusader lead to 8 at the 1:22 mark of the first quarter.  But, Coleman answered with back-to-back threes to close out the first quarter as Lincoln Christian led 24-10.

That was the closest Aquinas would get to the Crusaders (19-1).  Lincoln Christian knocked in nine first-half three pointers, as the Crusaders led by 30, 51-21 at the break.

Coleman finished with a game high 20 points, all in the first half.  The Crusaders were also led by Chloe Dworak who finished with 19, Mollie Sheppard with 17, and Emie Hollenbeck notched 13.

Aquinas closed the game on a 15-3 run, but it wasn’t enough.  Breanna Stouffer finished with 15 and Vanessa Bouhuslavsky added 12 for the Monarchs.
