By Kellan Heavican

WAVERLY---Aurora  used a fast start to notch 21 points in the first quarter to improve to 17-1 as they defeated Waverly 57-46 Friday at Waverly.

The Huskies got out to a 21-6 lead with 2 minutes left in the first quarter thanks to six Huskies scoring.  Junior Austin Allen had 10 of his 16 points in the first half for Aurora.

Waverly (8-10) outscored Aurora 15-9 in the second frame thanks to seven points from Austin Wubbels.  The Vikings had cut the Husky lead to nine at the break.

In the final quarter, Waverly cut the Aurora lead to 10 after a Jaron Bricker three after a missed free throw from Kade Moural.  Waverly had no choice but to foul to have a chance at the upset.

Tommy Leininger looked to have given Waverly life after a miss free throw with 3:40 left, but Tanner Wubbles committed a lane violation and Leininger made his second attempt.

Leininger finished with a game high 20 points including 12 in the second half.  Tanner Wubbels led Waverly with 16 points.

In a battle of top five teams, Waverly used a stifling defense to force 25 turnovers against Aurora Friday Night.

Waverly (12-4) jumped out to a 12-8 advantage after the first quarter and was able to pull away in the final quarter thanks to Ashley Cook’s 17 point performance. Cook scored eight points in the final frame including five of eight from the free throw line to seal the win for the Vikings.

Aurora’s Adyson Narber hit one of two free throws with 1:31 left in the game.  The make cut the Viking lead to seven. Her missed shot went off of Cook, but the Huskies turned the ball over on the next play.

Narber didn’t score in the first half but tallied 13 points in the second half.  Aurora (13-6) couldn’t find a shot to get the score to a single possession.

Brianna Boender added 11 points for Waverly.  Jaysa Sheierman led Aurora with 14 points. Waverly snapped Aurora’s six game win streak.
