- BOYS BASKETBALL: Shadegg, Rockets Overcome Thunderbolts
By Jeff Motz
Tyson Shadegg was quiet through much of the first half and part of the third quarter Friday night, but got noisy during the fourth quarter.
The 5-9 junior guard scored six of his 12 points in the final period to help Lincoln Northeast hold on for a 62-58 victory over Lincoln Pius X at the Ed Johnson Gym.
Shadegg, who spent much of the game in foul trouble, gave the Rockets a 57-55 lead on a three-pointer with 53 seconds left to play. TJ Hansen connected on one of two free throws to pull Pius X to within one. Shadegg nailed two free throws for a 59-56 Northeast lead with less than 40 seconds left.
Pius X answered when Thomas Robertson hit a mid-range, off balanced shot with 15 seconds left to cut the deficit to one. Malcolm Whitlow, who led all scorers with 22 points, nailed two free throws and KaVon Lofton hit one of two from the charity stripe to seal the win for Northeast, who improved to 10-6.
Joe Burt, like Shadegg, spent much of the night in foul trouble. The Pius X sophomore guard wound up scoring 12 points, nine in the final period to help the Thunderbolts rally back and tie the game at 52.
Pius X (9-4) led 13-8 after one quarter before taking a 23-21 halftime lead. Northeast then rallied in the third quarter behind Whitlow and 6-9 center Trace Tupper and outscored the Thunderbolts 25-15 for a 46-38 lead.
Hansen led Pius X in the loss with 18 points off the bench. Creighton Schoening added 10 points. Tupper added 12 points for Northeast before fouling out.
