- BOYS BASKETBALL: Costello's 28 Points Spark Storm Past Thunderbolts
By Jeff Motz
Justin Costello simply found a way to score at all costs. And it proved how cool he was under pressure.
The 6-1 junior guard for Elkhorn South scored 28 points in helping the Storm to a 58-50 victory Saturday over Lincoln Pius X at Bishop Flavin Gym.
With a tied game, Costello answered by hitting a three-pointer before time expired in the first quarter for a 17-14 Storm lead. Costello then scored on a break away layup, drew a foul and hit the free throw and scored again off a Pius X turnover to extend South's lead at 22-14 early in the second quarter.
The Storm took advanatage of Pius X's miscues in controlling the basketball, as Costello managed to score seven of his 15 first half points and Matt Slominski's two field goals helped extend the lead to 28-22 at the half.
Pius X (4-1) managed to cut away at the deficit by getting as close as 40-34 heading into the final quarter. The Thunderbolts got as close as 43-41 after Joe Burt hit a pair of free throws, then scored on a layup.
Elkhorn South (5-3) saw momentum, after Trey Kennebeck's basket underneath started a 9-1 run put the game out of reach for a 52-42 lead with 2:45 remaining.
Kennebeck joined Costello in double-figures, scoring 10 points, eight of those in the second half. Burt led Pius X in the loss with 16 points and Thomas Robertson scored 12 points for the 'Bolts.
