12/18/2015 - BOYS BASKETBALL: Gretna Survives Schneider's Threes, Waverly Comeback

By Jeff Motz

WAVERLY---Jake Schneider's 15 points on five three-pointers for Waverly in the first quarter was a story of its own.  But another story was how Gretna had an 16 point lead and nearly let go what may have been an easy win.

Regardless, the Dragons held on late for a 55-52 victory over the Vikings Friday night at Waverly.

Following a 17-16 Waverly lead on Schneider's fifth three-pointer, Gretna (5-1) rallied by utilizing their bench and took a 22-17 first quarter lead.  The Dragons pushed ahead by taking advantage of Schneider committing his third foul (which forced him to sit much of the second quarter).  Applying a full-court press, Gretna pushed ahead to a 39-23 lead with less than two minutes before halftime.

Waverly (2-3) managed to put together two more field goals to cut the deficit to 12 at the break.  The Vikings caught fire to start the second half.

A 2-3 zone defense limited Gretna's opportunities to score, plus 6-7 sophomore Tanner Wubbels countered with three-straight baskets to pull Waverly to within seven at 40-33.  The Vikings continued to chip away, getting as close as three before Gretna guard Jared Samuelson hit a mid-range, fade-away jumper to put the Dragons up 46-41.

It was Samuelson again, who scored twice, plus guard Joey Johnson that extended the Gretna lead to 52-46 early in the fourth.

Waverly didn't quit, relying on Tanner Wubbels and his older brother, 6-7 senior Austin Wubbels, who scored five straight points to pull the Vikings to within one, 52-51.

Gretna managed to stay ahead 54-51 when Samuelson hit two free throws, as part of his game-high 23 points.  Waverly guard Owen Gubbels hit one of two free throws and the Vikings had a basket waved off when Tanner Wubbels was called for offensive foul with 2:04 to play.

Ty Duin hit one of two free throws with 35 seconds left for a 55-52 Gretna advantage, still giving Waverly a chance to tie.  After a time out with five seconds left, the Vikings set up a play to go to Schneider, who shot from 22 feet away and missed it as time ran out.

Isaiah Workman was the only other player in double-figures for Gretna, with 10 points.  Tanner Wubbels added 16 points in the loss for Waverly.
