12/11/2015 - BOYS BASKETBALL: 3rd Quarter Spurt Helps Northeast To Win Over Columbus

By Jeff Motz

COLUMBUS---Lincoln Northeast finally found its stride Friday night after falling behind further in the third quarter.

The Rockets turned around a nine-point deficit and sprinted on a 10-0 run before winning 62-50 over the Discoverers at the Columbus High School Gym.

Northeast (1-2) fell behind immediately to start the second half, Columbus got a three-pointer from Kobe Ackerson, then Dallas Oberg scored two of his team-high 15 points and Ackerson's putback off an offensive rebound gave the Discoverers a 36-27 advantage.

Following a Northeast timeout, Talon Little scored off a layup, then Malcolm Helmstadter-Whitlow scored on a jumper from the left of the key and Tivon Phillips forced a turnover to score.  Trace Tupper's basket pulled the Rockets to within one and Malik Jones scored off a Columbus turnover to take a 37-36 lead with 4:45 remaining in the third period.

Both teams exchanged leads late in the third quarter before Northeast took a 47-43 and put it out of reach when Malcolm Helmstadter-Whitlow found a way to score around Columbus' 1-3-1 zone by nailing a floater as time ran out in the quarter.

The Rockets extended their lead 49-43.  But the Discoverers on a backdoor cut to the hoop and three pointer from Oberg.  That's as close as Columbus would get the rest of the way.

While Northeast made shots and free throws, Columbus struggled from the charity stripe (8-of-16).  Tupper's 20 points for the Rockets led all scorers, while the Rockets got 16 points from Helmstadter-Whitlow.

Oberg led Columbus with 15 points and teammates Mitchell Greiner and 6-5 sophomore Michael Koch each finished with 10 points.
