- C1-3 BOYS BASKETBALL: McGerr's 19 Helps Keep Christian's Season Alive
By Jeff Motz
WAVERLY---Dalton McGerr was the only spark the Lincoln Christian boys basketball team needed while slowing down the tempo against Lincoln Lutheran.
The 6-1 senior guard scored 19 points as the Crusaders used two scoring runs in a low-scoring affair to beat the Warriors 37-28 in the Class C1 Subdistrict 3 final at Waverly High School.
The win puts Christian (10-14) in the C1 District 2 championship game Monday night against Wilber-Clatonia, who upset Subdistrict 4 top-seed Milford 63-59 at Friend High School.
McGerr's first five points were the lone tally for the Crusaders in the first quarter, but a 10-2 late second quarter run helped in the turn around from a 6-5 first quarter deficit. A lone three in the second quarter from McGerr, plus two free throws from junior guard Dylan Chicoine and two offensive put backs from 6-5 junior forward Jared Bubak gave Christian a 17-13 halftime advantage.
Lutheran (14-12) held a 7-6 scoring advantage in the third period, with all seven points coming from Max McCoy, leaving the Warriors trailing 23-20. Just as quick as Lutheran responded, they quickly cooled off in the final quarter.
Christian went on a 13-0 run for about 7:20 of the final period. McGerr and Chicoine combined for 10 points during the run, while Phil Grothaus hit three free-throws for a 36-20 lead.
Lutheran's first points of the quarter came off a three-pointer from Harrison Martin with 40 seconds remaining. Martin hit another three with 30 seconds left. Bubak sealed the win for Christian by sinking one of two free throws, before Lutheran's 6-8 senior forward Josh Wendland put down a two-handed dunk as time ran out.
While McGerr was the only player in the game with double-figures, Chicoine added nine points to help in the Crusader win.
McCoy's seven points paced Lutheran.
