02/20/2015 - BOYS BASKETBALL: Lutheran Hangs Tough, Holds Off David City

By Jeff Motz

Lincoln Lutheran overcame a first half deficit and had to hold on late to beat David City 51-43 in boys basketball Friday night at the Lutheran Gym.

The Warriors got 20 points from 6-8 senior center Josh Wendlend, who scored 13 in the second half.

Lutheran (13-10) went on a 14-2 run to end the third period.   Trailing 27-26, Henry Schmidt got a steal and layup.  Then Wendland scored and drew a foul, hitting the free throw for a 31-27 Lutheran advantage with 3:34 to go.

Garrett Wachal later scored on a basket, then David City countered with a layup from Danielson before a Scout turnover led to a Grant Johnson three-pointer on the other end for a 36-29 lead with 1:39 remaining.

Another Wachal basket and a fastbreak layup from Wendland made it a 40-29 lead after three quarters.

David City (9-13) trailed 48-33 with 1:42 left to play, when they started a short rally.

After one of two free throws from Lutheran guard Henry Schmidt, the Scouts scored on a layup from Ben Danielson with 35 seconds left.  Then after a missed shot, the Scouts got to within nine at 49-40 when Adam Rehfwisch drove to the basket and scored.

Grant Johnson missed a pair of free throws on the Lutheran end of the court.  David City quickly got the ball in the front court and pulled to within six at 49-43 on a Ross Kirby three-pointer with 11.5 seconds to play.

Johnson sealed the win for Lutheran with a layup before time ran out.

A 8-8 first quarter game led to a 21-19 halftime lead for David City.

Wachal added 15 points in the victory for the Warriors, while Jonah Scheffler scored 14 for the Scouts before he fouled out.  Kirby hit 12 points for the Scouts, all of them behind the three-point arc, and Danielson chipped in 10 points.
