02/13/2015 - BOYS BASKETBALL: Warner's 22 Leads Waverly Past Plattsmouth

By Jeff Motz

WAVERLY---Of the three players in double-figures for the Waverly boys basketball team Friday night, it was Ben Warner who became the difference maker.

Warner, a 5-11 junior guard, sank 5-of-7 free throws in the final quarter to help the Vikings hold off Plattsmouth by the final of 65-57 at the Waverly Gym.

Warner's game high 22 points led Waverly to their 10th win of the season.  Junior guard Jaron Bricker added 14 points, including four three-pointers.

Sophomore guard Owen Gubbels, who added 10 points, sparked what would be a 13-0 run from the final minute of the first quarter into the second quarter.  Gubbels' three point with 34 seconds left in the period sparked a 17-2 second quarter scoring run.  Junior reserve Austin Wubbels nailed a tray, then Bricker added the first of his three, three-pointers in the quarter.

Warner sank four free throws during the run and Grant McGill added another free throw in the run that put the Vikings up 29-17 at halftime.

Plattsmouth (11-8) started an 8-0 run and would get  as close a four points to begin the third quarter.  Logan Santee scored on a layup, then Connor Dukes got a three-point play and Travis Sabatka nailed a three to pull the Blue Devils within reaching distance, 29-25.

Bricker connected on another three-pointer to spark a short rally into double-digits for Waverly, who led 47-35 after three quarters.

Dukes and Sabatka each scored 16 points to lead Plattsmouth in the loss.
