- HAC TOURNEY BASKETBALL: Athleticism Helps Links To Win Over Fremont
By Jeff Motz
Jason Towery made a case for himself on why he may be one of the best post players in Nebraska.
The 6-6 Lincoln High senior had a double-double, by scoring a game-high 20 points and grabbing 14 rebounds to help the Links to a 53-46 win over Fremont Tuesday night in the semifinals of the Heartland Athletic Conference Boys Basketball Tournament at Southeast High School.
Now, Towery and the Links have a date with Lincoln Northeast on Wednesday afternoon at 2:15 for the HAC tourney championship. The Rockets earned a 62-59 comeback win over Grand Island in the other semifinal game.
A big difference was how Fremont was able to limit the offensive production of Lincoln High guard KeShawn Wilson, who was limited to six points. The Tigers utilized a box and one defense, where Jordan Dredge and Schuyler Sutter took turns guarding the 6-2 senior.
While Wilson's offense was limited, Towery got some help from reserves Jaden Jilg-Brown and Aundra Gilbert, who combined for 17 points for Lincoln High, who had a 27-17 halftime lead over the Tigers.
The Links allowed Fremont to get within seven points at 34-27 with 1:31 left in the third period, the closest the Tigers would get the rest of the way. Jilg-Brown nailed a three-pointer with 3:20 left to give the Links a 45-39 lead.
Hunter Horracks led Fremont in scoring with 16 points.
