02/07/2014 - BOYS BASKETBALL: Southeast Wastes No Time Holding Off Lincoln High

By Jeff Motz

Just 24 hours after disposing of Lincoln North Star, Lincoln Southeast quickly turned around to face an old-time rival, Lincoln High.

Didn't phase the Knights' boys basketball team.

Southeast used a 10-2 first quarter run and never looked back while earning a 74-56 victory over the Links Friday night at the Prasch Center.

Luke Gifford, who scored a game-high 20 points for the Knights (15-4), hit back to back three-pointers during the run.  Gifford connected on three, three-pointers in the first half.

What also helped Southeast was going to a box-and-one defense, isolating Lincoln High's Keshawn Wilson by guarding him all night.  Wilson hit a three-pointer to pull the Links to within four at 10-6 with a three pointer.

B.J. Day countered with a basket for the Knights and Guan Whol hit one of two free-throws for LHS before Southeast ended the quarter on the 10-2 run.  Day scored on a reverse layup with 2:50 left, then a Lincoln High turnover gave the Knights another basket on a three-pointer from Danny Clare.  Southeast forced a turnover with 1:45 left and scored on a fade away shot from D.J. Foster for a 17-7 advantage.

Brady Blazek hit a three-pointer to put the Knights up 20-7 with under a minute remaining before Links' forward Jamie Davis sank a pair of free throws.

From there, Southeast took off to a 38-25 halftime lead and had a 57-38 lead after three quarters.

Day finished with 15 points and Clayton Peterson added 13 points for Southeast.

Wilson and Whol led Lincoln High with 14 points apiece.
