02/01/2014 - BOYS BASKETBALL: Bunnies Flex Second Half Muscle On Rockets

By Jeff Motz

Through the first 16 minutes, Omaha Benson couldn't shake off Lincoln Northeast.  That quickly changed in the second half.

The Class A fifth-ranked Bunnies went on a 21-9 third quarter run to pull away from the Rockets for a 63-42 victory in boys basketball Saturday night at the Ed Johnson Gym.

Benson (15-2) hit the gas pedal right away in the third quarter. Danny Barfield tossed an alleyoop for a Thik Bol over the head reverse dunk, then all-stater Khyri Thomas hit one of two free throws and scored off a steal for a 30-20 lead.

Connor Springman, who led all scorers with 23 points for Northeast, gave the Rockets their first basket of the second half, but Benson responded quickly with a two-handed dunk from Tyree Peters for a 32-22 lead with with 5:48 left in the third.

After a Spencer Kirk layup for Northeast, Benson then got another two-handed dunk fro Bol off an assist from Barfield.  The Bunnies got two more free throws from Thomas with 4:08 remaining for a 36-24 advantage.

A missed Michael Buckley three-pointer resulted in Thomas' follow up dunk for a 40-26 Benson lead.  Barfield then scored off a Northeast turnover and Buckley got a two-handed slam dunk for a 44-26 Bunny advantage with 1:35 to play in the quarter.

Springman added two more free throws for the Rockets and Teth Kueth hit two free throws to give Benson a 46-28 lead after three quarters.
