By Jeff Motz

WAVERLY---Ashley Cook and her Waverly teammates weathered a storm Friday night.

The 5-9 sophomore hit two free throws and a basket late to help the Class B No. 9 Vikings upset No. 7 Elkhorn South 43-39 in girls basketball at the Waverly gym.

Waverly (7-6) rallied back from a 32-29 third quarter deficit to outscore The Storm 14-7 in the final period.  Mikenzie Delgado hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 32 with 6:26 left to play.  After an Elkhorn South turnover, Waverly got two free throws from Brianna Boender with 5:43 left for a 34-32 Viking lead.

A Nicole Vana three-pointer put The Storm back in front at 35-34 with four minutes remaining.   Senior center Olivia Boender was fouled on the next Viking possession and sank a pair of free throws for a 36-35 lead.

Adrianna Veland helped Elkhorn South regain the lead at 37-36 lead with 3:01 left by hit two separate one-and-one attempts.

Waverly put together another late rally, after Ashley Cook hit a free-throw and Brianna Boender scored underneath the basket for a 39-37 lead with two minutes left.

Then, Amanda Cook hit a free-throw to put the Vikings up 40-37 with 59 seconds remaining. Then Elkhorn South got a pair of free throws from Lauren Maciejewski with 39 seconds left to trim the deficit to 40-39.

Out of a Waverly time out, Ashley Cook broke the Storm press by scoring on a layup to extend the Viking lead at 42-39 with 25 seconds left.  Elkhorn South tried going for the win with six seconds left, but Maciejewski missed a three-pointer and Cook got the rebound, only to be fouled and hit one of two free throws to seal the win.

Brianna Boender had a game-high 18 points for Waverly, while Olivia Boender added 15.  Megan Kucks led Elkhorn South (10-4) with 11 points.

JJ Zumbrennen hit six three-pointers for a game-high 18 points to lead the Storm to their 13th-straight win and stay undefeated.  Matt Thomas added 15 points for Elkhorn South, who led 18-7 after the first quarter and 39-18 at halftime.

Waverly (7-7) got as close as 66-44 late in the game, before the Storm rattled off nine-straight points to earn the victory.

The Vikings got 13 points from sophomore Ben Warner, while senior center Ross Sheridan added 10 points in the losing effort.
