OMAHA---When opportunity knocks, Omaha Creighton Prep took advantage.
The Class A 10th-ranked Junior Jays overcame early turnovers and a balanced attack from Lincoln East to earn a 49-47 victory Saturday night in a boys basketball game at Prep's Heider Center.
Trailing East 41-35 to begin the 4th quarter, Prep (6-4) stayed poised defensively. But Tommy Pritchard quickly responded for the Junior Jays with a three pointer to pull to within three before the Spartans went into a stall offense.
An offensive foul from East's Josh Nunnally gave Prep got the ball back, who cut their deficit to 41-40 with 4:26 left on a basket from Pritchard and couldn't convert on a free-throw for a three-point play.
But Bryan Reimers scored on the other end off a three-point play that extended East's lead to 44-40 with 4 minutes to play. A basket from Isaiah Maxwell on the next Prep possession pulled them within two of the Spartans. Brandon Metcalf hit a pair of free throws to put East back up 46-42 with 2:52 remaining.
Maxwell pulled the Junior Jays to within two on a layup and Pritchard scored and hit a free throw as part of a three-point play to give Prep a 47-46 lead with 1:18 left.
Reimers was fouled on the block with 45 seconds remaining and hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 47. Prep held on the ball and called time out with 14 seconds left, which set up Maxwell's dish off to Chad Witecy with the game winning layup with five seconds left.
East then set up a play to inbound the ball down the floor, but Shane Watteyne's pass was overthrown into Prep's Birdcage student section as the buzzer sounded.
The game mostly belonged to East (6-6), with the Spartans sprinting out to a 26-16 second quarter lead before the Junior Jays narrowed the gap to 30-27 at halftime.
Reimers scored 14 of his game-high 22 points in the first half. Metcalf added 12 points for the Spartans. Pritchard had a team-high 13 points for Prep and Witecy scored 12 points in the win.
