- BOYS BASKETBALL: JANECEK'S BUZZER BEATER HELPS WAVERLY DEFEAT PLATTEVIEW
By Jeff Motz
WAVERLY--Dylan Janecek may have found a spot on ESPN SportsCenter's top ten.
The 6-2 Waverly senior guard got the ball just inside the half-court stripe off a scrum and heaved it from nearly 45 feet away, only to hit the glass and drop through the basket to give the Vikings a 56-55 victory over Platteview Friday night at Waverly.
Janecek, who led Waverly with 19 points, scored off a full-court pass from Ryan Searle to pull the Vikings to within two of Platteview at 55-53 with less than 12 seconds left in the game.
Following a Waverly time out, the Trojans had a chance to inbound the ball and draw a foul, but the pass from Seth Starks to Dylan Bartley got loose, ending up in a scramble for the ball before Janecek ended up with it as he was falling to the floor on the right side toward mid-court.
It was as he was falling that Janecek launched the ball and it went through the hoop.
Waverly (4-4) had to play catch up the first half before taking a 38-32 lead in the third quarter before Platteview raced to a 9-0 run and took a 41-38 advantage. The Trojans led at the half 22-14.
Senior Ross Sheridan proved to be pivotal inside for the Vikings, scoring 18 points in the win.
Chris Mackevicius scored a game-high 22 points for the Trojans, who fall to 2-6. Platteview also got 13 points from Bartley, who hit three-straight three-pointers to put the Trojans up 10-2 early in the first quarter.
