01/05/2014 - From The Press Box: Janecek Makes Shot Of A Lifetime, Southeast Rolls Red Hot Into January

ESPN might have to consider showing Waverly guard Dylan Janecek's buzzer beater shot to beat Platteview on Friday night.

It's SportsCenter Top Ten material, without a doubt.  Janecek got the ball after a scrum at mid-court with one second left, lofted it from almost 45 feet away, hit the top of the glass and through the hoop to give the Vikings a 56-55 victory over the Trojans.

Janecek, the lone returning starter from Waverly's state tournament team a year ago, has improved his shooting game tremendously.  He scored 19 points in Friday's win against Platteview.  Last year, Janecek was mainly a distributor as a point guard and found guys like Brandon Janssen, Adam Jorgensen, Sam Tewes and Erik Evans to score.

With the loss of those four to graduation, Janecek has matured into a solid player.  Not that he wasn't before, but he's picked up a lot of slack leftover from last year's district championship team.  Look for Waverly to surprise a few teams this year.

If you missed out on the game Friday and want to see or hear the final shot, here are a couple of places to check out Janecek's shot.

This might be the best Lincoln Southeast boys basketball team I've seen in quite a while.

BJ Day is playing his best basketball right now, Luke Gifford's athleticism has been key in many victories, Trey Beamon's outside shooting has been top notch and Clayton Peterson has been a difference maker, especially in a 55-52 come from behind win over Lincoln Northeast on Dec. 21.

Brady Blazek, Logan Beebe, Taylor Richards, Danny Clare and DJ Foster add depth to either the other starting role or bench.

The Knights enter January with an 8-1 record, champions of the Heartland Athletic Conference and on a mission to keep their state tournament dreams alive.  The lone loss of the season came at the hands of Bellevue West in the Great Nebraska Shootout December 7, falling to the Thunderbirds 69-63.  The rematch is Jan. 18 at Bellevue West.
But that's only one of three challenging games this month.

After Thursday night's game with one-time winner Lincoln Southwest, the Knights head to top-ranked and four-time defending Class A state champion Omaha Central, who captured the Metro Conference title by defeating previous No. 1 Omaha Benson.

Central is without Akoy Agau for the first time in four years, but Tre'Shawn Thurman is the next big prospect that could lead the Eagles back to prominence again.  Southeast will be playing in a tough environment in what could be their biggest test yet.

The third tough opponent this month for the Knights will be Norfolk.  The Panthers are 9-0 and captured the Greater Nebraska Conference championship with a 49-45 win over North Platte.  Like past teams for head coach Ben Ries, Norfolk is solid out front and has a good presence inside.

Lincoln North Star, Lincoln High, Omaha South and Fremont are four more highly competitive teams Southeast will face in February.

Join me for the Norris vs. Waverly boys and girls doubleheader Thursday night at 6pm and 7:45.  Both games will be carried through the direct website feed and mobile feed on  The boys game will also be carried on the radio on KFOR 1240.

Friday night, it's our first intra-city boys game of 2014 as Lincoln North Star has a rematch with Lincoln Northeast at 7:30pm at the Ed Johnson Gym.  Catch the game here on or on the radio again on KFOR 1240.  Saturday night, join Barry Silverstein and myself for the Lincoln East/Omaha Creighton Prep at 7pm from Prep's Heider Center.
