12/17/2013 - From The Press Box: Southeast's 2 OT Win Provides Big Boost Before Holiday Break

A double-overtime victory early in the season against a ranked opponent?  I would take that in an instant.

So would the Lincoln Southeast boys basketball team.

The pre-season No. 8 rated Knights bounced back from a seven-point deficit to No. 6 Omaha Creighton Prep Saturday night and hit big threes, along with free throws down the stretch to upset the Junior Jays 78-72 in overtime.

Trey Beamon's five three-pointers proved to be key for Southeast in the second half and overtime periods.  B.J. Day's 11 free throws helped the Knights edge the Junior Jays.  Those are things you would like to see your team accomplish in late February and early to mid-March.

Southeast's athleticism may outweigh opponents in the city, but not by much.   The city race may heat up more during January and February.  The Knights have their first intra-city game of the season Saturday night at Lincoln Northeast.  The Rockets are coming off back to back wins last weekend against Columbus and Papillion-LaVista.

Can't count out Lincoln High, despite their setback to four-time state champion Omaha Central.  Lincoln North Star is starting to come around, too, and Lincoln East won on the road at North Platte and at home against Millard West.

Lying ahead for all those teams is the Heartland Athletic Conference Holiday Tournament.

The pairings have been set for the boys portion of the tournament at Northeast's Ed Johnson Gym, which starts Saturday, Dec. 28.

Southeast will be the top seed and play the eight-seed Lincoln Southwest at 1:45pm.  Fifth-seed Lincoln High meets four-seed Lincoln East at 3:30pm.  Fremont comes in as the No. 3 seed and plays No. 6 Northeast at 5:15pm, while No .2 seed Lincoln North Star plays No. 7 Grand Island at 7pm.

On the girls portion of the tournament at East, which also starts Saturday, Dec. 28, top-seed Fremont plays the No. 8 seed Lincoln High at 1:45pm, followed by No. 5 Grand Island and No. 4 Lincoln Southeast at 3:30pm.  Lincoln Southwest is the No. 3 seed and plays No. 6 Lincoln North Star at 5:15pm and No. 2 Lincoln Northeast plays No. 7 Lincoln East at 7pm.

All consolation and winner's bracket semifinal games are Monday, Dec. 30.  Seventh, fifth and third place games, along with the championship will be played on Tuesday, Dec. 31.
